I had my class test 1 today, I scored 12/20. I got to study harder next time XD.

In the lesson, Ms Faridah showed us 3 videos from Youtube. It was some kind of hilarious videos related to Singapore. We also check up on talkingcock.com. It was a website which discuss about political and social issue in Singapore in a funny manner. The purpose of the web was on entertainment. All the posts are written in the stand of a Singaporean.

After browsing through the web, we were asked to give our point of views on the web as the government, Singaporean and foreigner. For our group, our role given was as a Singaporean. We talk about how we felt about this web and whether we will accept this kind of joke about us on the net. Lesson today was an interesting one, I enjoyed participating in the role play and the debating session:D.

In today lesson, we were taught how to search for invisible information. Our lecturer had given us some examples of invisible search facilities to for information which were hidden, that can't be found using normal search engine. Research gateway is one of a very direct and simple tool that she introduced. The information found will all be in full text document format, and below the text there will be the name of the person who summarize this document. The information found on research gateways are done by the professional, thus it will be a reliable one.

To me, invisible web is more effective than Meta search as most of the results shown are in full text document. Comparing both invisible web and yahoo directory, both provide me with relevant and useful source for my topic.

In the future, I will still continue to use invisible web to search for my research. Test is coming up on Fri, I got to revise again :D

Though we got off for today, but there was work given. We were asked to post message on how Internet has enrich our academic and social life. I realise the important of having Internet in the world. With it one can communicate with each other even he is on the other side of the Earth. Using Internet has become part of my personal life. It is also a useful tool for me to search for information for my school work.

I find that having discussion online is much better than having it face-to-face. I do not need to face the situation where 10-20 pairs of eyes looking at me. I can express myself better online than face-to-face.

Follow up action: refining of question that I will be posting on the forum.

In the lesson today, we had learnt 2 more search facilities [Yahoo directory and Meta Crawler]. Between this 2 search facilities I prefer Yahoo directory as the topic lists is arranged in a hierarchical way and the information is provided by specialists. I think that the information on the Yahoo directory will be more reliable. Metacrawler do not provide me with relevant info for my topic, though the results are taken from different search engines.

In the future, I will use site feed more often as it helps to take away the blog skin and those blink blink design. It will leave the page more plain and making it easier for reader to read.

Our lecturer had also shown us some examples of the blog from our class, I found out that still lack of some details in certain posts. I am going to read through every posts and edit them again :D. Day by day, I begin to discover more and more search facilities that I have never use before.

It was my first time encounter with the word Boolean operator. Through today's lesson, I had learnt on how to refine my sentence using some keys to get better and relevant search results. Previously there was one module where attended one library workshop to learn how to use the OPAC. We had learned to add "" together with the phrase we were going to look for, so it will find the web where it had the exact phrase in it.

I tried searching for my keywords of research topic with and without using Boolean operator. I found out that by using Boolean operator, it narrows down my search with relevant results. For my practical 3, I used Google and Google scholar to search for my research topic. Comparing both web, I preferred Google scholar as it take shorter time to generate the information. The information found was more relevant than those found in the Google web.

I also sign up for the forum I found related to my topic. In the forum, it provides me with more information on Global warming which I can add on to my research. It was my first time participating in forum and I am new to all the features in there. I got to give myself some times to explore around before I post my post onto the web.

After gathering/taking all info, we must cite the source so that "credit" is given to the person who search and compile all the information for us. It is important for us to acknowledge the source, if not we will be charge of plagiarism.

Both websites I visited were by organization. The purpose of Internet resource of both web found is for business. But for the web GoGo-shopping, it also serves the purpose of entertainment as there are latest news updates of the artists posted in the web.

Comparing the purpose of the webs found this time round it was different from the web we looked for in the previous exercise. [Information V.S. entertainment and business] When the purpose of resources is for information purposes, the web would provide factual information. But when the purpose is for business, the web would provide more information on the price and details of the product they promoting. In entertainment web, it gives information such as those gossips and tabloids about the artists. Some information given on this kind of web will not be quite reliable.

Through this exercise, I have learnt the pros and cons of shopping online. I have also better understanding of the terms and condition and the risk of it.

21.10.2008 [EIR Day2]

The lecture today was about identifying the different purposes of Internet resources. Through the lesson, I have learnt what was advocacy and how to identify business/marketing web. The features of business/marketing are online catalogue to promote their product and they also provide online services to the customer.

We were asked to do one exercise where we had got $500 to spend for online shopping. I have learnt how to shop online and the process of registration to the services. I had also identified the pros and cons of it. Next time I am going to try to shop online for real. :D

20.10.2008 [EIR Day1]

In the first lesson, we were brief about the overall module. We also did one activity in group of five where we chose one topic from the options given. We split the five questions between us. Each one of us search for answer to one question, we then combine everything together. We would finish the activity faster as a group instead of doing by our own self. As an individual, we asked choose a research topic. We will need to apply the stuffs we had learnt onto the assignment given. My topic was: Effects of Global warming on the environment. I chose to work on this topic as I already got some basic knowledge from the Geography lesson during secondary. Now I would wish to learn and know more information about the topic I chose.

When I reach home, I read through the lecture note. Only then I knew what RSS stands for, and I started looking for more examples of RSS online. My impression of this module before I attend the lesson was that it would be an easy one, but after the briefing I found out actually there were a lot of things that I did not know. I have learnt few effective ways of getting information from the web today.

20.10.2008 [Self intro]

Hi :D I am Tzu Hui currently studying in Product and Industrial Design year 2. My course background allows me to participate in the entire design process, from conceptualizing ideas to produce finished products. The finish product will be made by one self using the modeling skill we learnt. I feel a great sense of achievement making out the product I sketched on paper.

In my free time, I like to listen to music and search for music videos online. Often I would meet up with my secondary schoolmate to update each other on our progress in school. I also looked up on forums for latest updates of the artist I like. Through forums, I had made some new friends and we often exchange the latest information we found.
